Understanding Canada’s Express Entry Healthcare and Social Services Professionals (2025 Update)
Are you a healthcare and social services professional thinking about moving to Canada? The 2025 updates to the Express Entry system may be exactly what you’ve been waiting for. With a clear focus on strengthening the healthcare system and meeting social service demands, the Canadian government has refined its category-based immigration draws to attract skilled workers in these essential sectors.
Let me walk you through who qualifies, the occupations that fall under the Healthcare and Social Services category, how to determine your eligibility, and highlight the newly eligible roles you should definitely keep on your radar.
What’s New in Canada’s Express Entry for 2025?
Canada’s Express Entry system now includes category-based selection, which means they’re prioritising applicants based on specific occupational needs, and this year, healthcare and social services made the cut.
To qualify, you must:
- Have at least six months of continuous, full-time work experience (or equivalent part-time) in one eligible occupation within the past three years.
- Be working in one of the recognised job categories listed for healthcare and social services.
- Meet all other general requirements under the Express Entry stream, including language proficiency and educational credentials.
Eligible Healthcare and Social Services Occupations
The 2025 update includes 35 job titles, covering a wide range of healthcare and social support professions. Some of the key occupations include:
- Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners
- Licensed Practical Nurses
- Medical Laboratory Technologists
- Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists
- Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians
- Social Workers
- Medical Radiation and Sonography Technologists
- Respiratory Therapists
- Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists
- Counsellors and Mental Health Therapists
It’s worth noting that roles like social workers and pharmacists were newly added this year, while others like education counsellors have been moved to a different category.
How Do You Know If You’re Eligible?
Great question. First, start by identifying your National Occupation Classification (NOC) code. This code reflects your job title and duties in Canada’s system. Then:
- Cross-check your NOC against the updated list for the Healthcare and Social Services category.
- Confirm you’ve worked in that role for at least six months in the last three years.
- Make sure you meet the Express Entry profile requirements, such as your language score, education, and proof of funds (if needed).
If you’ve ticked all the boxes, you’re likely a strong candidate.
Newly Eligible Occupations and Alternate Job Titles
Some newly welcomed roles include:
- Pharmacists (NOC 31120) – also known as Clinical or Community Pharmacists
- Pharmacy Technicians (NOC 32124) – sometimes referred to as Pharmaceutical Technicians or Assistants
- Social Workers (NOC 41300) – which includes Family Social Worker or Clinical Social Worker
- Medical Lab Assistants (NOC 33101) – also called Phlebotomists or Lab Technicians
- Dialysis Technicians and EEG Technologists under the catch-all group of Other Medical Technologists (NOC 32129)
