I hear that you’ve been wanting to japa.  Maybe talking about it, maybe even slowly planning towards it and now you are trying to figure out the perfect country for you to move to and how to go about making this decision. The world is such a big place, with so many options of countries and cities for you to move to.

It’s not a small decision, figuring out, and making the choice of the perfect location that would work out in your favour. It doesn’t have to be a hassle and with everything in life, once you consider certain factors and salient points, and weigh the pros and cons, there is almost nothing that you cannot figure out. 

Everybody has their wants and what they are looking for and all of this would factor into making the decision that will be of benefit as to where they would be moving to. 

One thing you need to also keep in mind is how different countries have different cultures and traditions, different ways of life, different cuisines, different modes of transportation, different healthcare services, different insurance services, and different modes of governance, just to mention a few. As little as some of these things might come across, in the large scheme of things they all add up and should factor in your decision-making as to the things that you can compromise on and the things that you would absolutely not be able to compromise on.

So what are some factors that you need to consider before moving to a new country?

1. Your Future Goals

I cannot scream this loud enough but it is important that you figure out if the country you are choosing to move to is one that the lifestyle and all that has to do with the country aligns with what you want for your future self. And all of this includes family life if you want to get married or if you are moving with your family or if your family would be coming to meet you over there.

You also need to consider your career, does this country align with your career goals and plans? Will you be able to be your best self, reach your potential and make exploits in this country? A good example would be content creators moving to Los Angeles or New York City. This is because there are cities in the United States that work very well for content creators.

2. Healthcare

One of these things you need to consider when you’re moving to a new country is how accessible and affordable is healthcare in the country. And this is even more important for people who are living with different health challenges and need special and dedicated care concerning their health. You need to consider how easy it is going to be for you to get access to medical assistance, how easy it’s going to be for you to have access to your healthcare provider, how easy it will be for you to have access to the treatment and medicine that you might need.

3. Work Culture 

A lot of people who move to another country mostly do it because of work, therefore it is important that you try to glean as much information as you can about the work culture of the country you plan to move to. As with everything in the world some countries have great work cultures and some do not. For instance, Canada has one of the best maternity leave packages for new mothers, if you know that this is something that is important to you then Canada might actually be on your list.

You need to understand what your take home would be, and also your take home after taxes. You need to know if you’re getting bonuses and vacation allowance every year, also you need to know about the maternity leave and if you get any at all and how long it’s going to be and if it’s going to be a paid maternity leave, you need to find out if you have days off, and also if your company covers your health insurance and if they offer moving expenses, accommodation expenses and so on.

4. Quality of Life and Living Costs

If you live in Lagos as I do, then you would understand this and I don’t even need to go too far. Not just Lagos but also Nigeria in general, with how hard things are right now, it is important that if you decide that you’re leaving Nigeria you choose a country that has a great quality of life and also that the living cost is not going to break your neck, especially if you are not quite at that point where you can afford a high cost of leaving. You need to consider what housing, food, entertainment, healthcare and transport would cost you.

5. The Religion and Culture of The Country

In countries like Iran, Afghanistan where they are mostly Muslims or just a country where they are predominantly a particular religion, if you as somebody who practises a different religion move there, you might not feel comfortable in such places which is why if you are a religious person you might want to consider that or even if you’re irreligious, t might make you uncomfortable moving to the country where they are devout. 

6. Language

There is no way communication can happen when different languages are being spoken and the people trying to communicate with each other do not understand each other. Yes, you might say that you would learn the new language of the country they’re moving to which a lot of people have done but it’s also something you need to put into consideration and maybe start learning the language while you’re still in your home country or like some countries who offer a one-year language and culture course when you move there.

7. Education System

If you are leaving your country to study elsewhere then you need to consider the educational system and what that means for you. Every country’s educational system is different, so it is only right that you learn about the educational culture of each country and take the time to decide which fits best into your learning and educational goals and which would be great for you.
