Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa Faces Backlash Over Controversial Remarks on Nigerian Immigration

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the first Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), has recently sparked debate among Nigerian youths. Critics argue that her previous inflammatory comments do not reflect the empathetic stance expected of a government official. Her latest response to a tweet by UK-based lawyer Dele Olawale has intensified the discussion on immigration challenges.

Dele Olawale’s Perspective on UK Immigration

In his tweet, Dele Olawale speaks of the difficulties many Nigerians face in the United Kingdom. He pointed out that the rising challenges have led to increased cases of depression, fractured homes, depression, shattered lives, and regrets. Olawale urged Nigerians to give deeper thought to their decision to relocate and to seek proper legal advice before risking their livelihood by selling off their assets.

Dabiri-Erewa’s Response and Its Implications

In response, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged that NIDCOM has seen a surge of immigrants expressing regret over their relocation decisions. She reinforced her point by quoting Nigerian professional American football defensive tackle, Moro Ojomo:

“The grass is not greener on the other side; it’s greener where you nurture it.”

Her comment aimed to caution Nigerians against idealizing life abroad without considering the challenges they might face.

have voiced their dissent and support, respectively, reflecting the different opinions on immigration and the responsibility of the government. Their reactions open up a bigger conversation about the balance between seeking better opportunities abroad and addressing the issues at home.

Finally, the exchange between Dele Olawale and Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa exposes the critical issues surrounding immigration, personal decision-making, and government accountability. While Olawale stresses caution for how challenging life in the UK can be, Dabiri-Erewa emphasizes the importance of nurturing one’s own country. This ongoing debate calls for a proper conversation on whether relocation truly offers a better future or if the solutions lie in reforming domestic policies.
