Nigerians Among The 93 Migrants Rescued on The Island of Lampedusa, Italy
It was reported that about 93 migrants made it to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. They consist of people from Nigeria, Pakistan, Sudan, Bangladesh and Eriteria. They were about 55 and they were rescued on a rubber boat in the Strait of Sicily by a migrant rescue vessel Trotamar III which is run by an NGO.
According to the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR, though the number is down 4% from the previous month, about 3,329 people landed on the coasts of Italy in February 2025 and about 84% of the people that arrived in February disembarked on the Island of Lampedusa. It is worthy of note that arrivals have increased by 49% in comparison to 2024.
All the new 93 migrants joined about 103 more migrants at the local hotspot in the Islands The Imbriacola district. Some of these 93 migrants include minors who said they had paid 2,000 dollars and departed from Zuwura in Libya.
Additionally, on Sunday morning, 71 migrants, 62 of the 71 men, 9 women, 16 unaccompanied minors, and 3 family units, got off at Ravenna from the Humanity 1 ship of the German-based international migrant rescue NGO SOS Humanity. Of the 71 people, some of them are from Nigeria, Togo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Benin, Sudan Niger, and Mali and 51 people are from Eritrea and 9 people are from Ethiopia.Â
50 of the 71 people were moved to Bologna while the rest will stay back in Ravenna.
