If you recall, we recounted how Ghanaians sniff out foreigners and bill them in dollars. Well, It turns out it doesn’t happen in Ghana alone.
Here is a recent story from Covenant Nsa, a Social Media Manager and Student in Rwanda who has had a similar experience.
“I have lived in Rwanda for 8 months now and let me tell you something.
Once these people even sniff that you are a foreigner they will double the price of whatever product or service you are getting
From motorbike guys
To market vendors
To even salons
It’s ridiculous
From my house to a place like Kigali heights is 500rwf for instance, but immediately I speak English with the bike men, they will tell me it’s 1000rwf.
Sometimes I’ll pay cos I’m in a hurry and they aren’t other bikes around, but sometimes I’ll be stubborn.
Today I had a meeting in school.
I’d put on my fine cloth and left my house mentally preparing for exorbitant charges.
I flagged down a bike man and told him where I was going.
This man told me 4,000rwf! From my house to Alu Azam 🙄
Lol, Shey your bike carry free food and AC ni?
I told this man that I pay 1,800 to school and he was visibly angry.
I was like Oga please be going o.
5 minutes later, I found another person that was will to collect 2000rwf
Meanwhile, a Rwandan will pay 1500 or less sef for the same distance 😅
That’s how I went to the market and these boy told me 4,000rwf for 1kg of fresh pepper
Lolllllll
Let us be calming down for Jesus.”
