Checklist For Moving To A New Country

If you enjoy making lists like me then adding this to your relocation checklist would help you with your relocation journey to a new country. We already know that moving is not one of the easiest things, it can be stressful, demanding and time-consuming.

Preparation for relocation can take as long as a year depending on the country you are relocating to. To ease the process and make things as stress-free as possible, you should make use of this checklist to help you

Make sure your passport is up to date and get the necessary visa

Depending on the country that you are moving to, you will need your passport and though some countries might be visa-free for certain passport holders or visa on arrival or visa before arrival. You need to understand where you’re going and what demands they will be making on you when it comes to your passport and visa. If you need to update your passport you might need to take the time out to do that before it is time for you to travel. This should be on your checklist. You can find more on the different types of visas here.

Buy your travel and health insurance

Nothing like your travel insurance and health insurance to help put your mind at rest and also help to protect you from health and travel expenses that you didn’t plan for. In cases where you might have health issues, or your flight is delayed covered these expenses for you.

Get your medical checkup done

Before you relocate, you should go to the doctor to get your medical checkup done. You should take this opportunity to do your yearly full-body test. This is to ascertain that you’re healthy enough to take the journey and that you have no health challenges.

Get the right vaccines

Different countries have different vaccines that they demand you to take before entering their country. Vaccines like hepatitis b, typhoid, meningitis etc. Read more about vaccines here

Set a travel budget

Budgeting will help you keep track of your spending and not go overboard. Pick a rough estimate of your living monthly expenses to help you. Your living expenses will include rent, groceries, entertainment, education and so on. This should be on your relocation checklist.

Relocating or Travelling with your pet

If you are travelling with your pet, you need to check out the regulations that guide relocating with pets or travelling with pets to the country that you’re going to. You need to ensure that your pet has a pet passport, the right vaccines and also a doctor’s check-up. You can learn more about travelling with pets to another country here.

Sell or give away your properties

If you’re relocating entirely to another country, one of the things you will need to sort out is what to do with your properties. Some people give out their properties to friends and family while some decide to sell them and declutter these items.

There are many different ways you are able to sell items and one of them is on japa.ng where they help you sell your items and create a middle ground for sellers and buyers.

Buy your flight tickets

Something else that should be on your checklist is purchasing your flight ticket. It is advisable that you purchase your flight tickets way ahead of time in order to help you beat exorbitant prices. There is an example of a Nigerian who was relocating to the UK but bought her flight ticket a few days before travelling and spent over 1 million naira while people who had purchased flight tickets months earlier spends about 300k to 400k

Make extra copies of important documents

To be on the safer side and protect yourself from unexpected circumstances, it is advisable that you make extra copies of all your important documents and this includes birth certificates, passports, visas, marriage certificates, medical records, travel insurance records, health insurance records, just in case you misplaced your original copies of these documents. You can also take it a step further by laminating the original copies to protect them from getting damaged easily.

Make a list of items you will be travelling with and items you want to leave behind or give out

Something else that should be on your relocation checklist is a list of things you want to give out on the list of things you want to travel with. You need to figure out the living situation where you’re moving to and how much space you have to determine what you will be packing. This will also protect you from having to pay extra luggage fees if you pack well within the accepted luggage weight.

Open a bank account

Some countries allow you to open bank accounts online and you can start the process of opening a bank account for the country that you’re going to before you even get there and then when you can finish the application when you arrive there.

It is a safer and more practical option to have a bank account in the country that you’re moving to because it saves you expenses and crazy exchange rates at the end of the day. Opening an account should be on your checklist and research will help you determine whether or not you can do this online or you have to wait until you get to the country before you can start the application for opening one.
