UK Construction Labour Shortage: A Perfect Opportunity for Skilled Foreign Workers

-

Inside the UK Construction Labour Shortage—and How Foreign Workers Can Fill the Gap

It’s no secret that Britain is in the middle of a construction crisis with a labour shortage, not just with bricks and mortar, but with the hands to put them together. With ambitious government targets to build 1.5 million homes by 2029, the UK construction sector is struggling with a serious labour shortage. From roofers to bricklayers, skilled hands are in short supply

The big question: where are the workers?

A lot of this stems from a mix of an ageing workforce, declining apprenticeship numbers, and post-Brexit immigration rules. To address this, the UK has opened its doors (a bit wider) to skilled foreign workers. So if you’re planning to japa and have experience in construction, this might just be your opportunity to work and live in the UK.

The Visa Route: What You Need to Know

  1. The Skilled Worker Visa (SWV):
This is the main route for foreign construction workers. As of April 2024, roles like bricklayers, masons, roofers, carpenters, plasterers, and tilers are all on the newly updated Immigration Salary List (ISL), which replaced the former Shortage Occupation List.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A confirmed job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor.

  • The job must be on the list of eligible occupations.

  • Proof of English language proficiency.

  • Minimum salary threshold of £23,200 per year or £11.90/hour

Application Process:

  • Secure a job with a UK sponsor.

  • Receive a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

  • Apply online for the Skilled Worker visa.

  • Pay the visa fee (typically between £719 and £1,500).

  • Pay the healthcare surcharge (£1,035/year).

  • Wait for a decision (usually within 3–8 weeks).
Once approved, you can live and work in the UK for up to five years, with the option to extend or apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after five years.

Why This Matters

You too can build and have a life in the UK with your construction skills. With thousands of roles to fill, the opportunities are boundless. Whether you’re a seasoned builder or a younger skilled worker, this might just be your chance to create a new life for yourself outside of your home country.
