Bulgaria and Romania Join the Schengen Zone, Expanding Europe’s Visa-Free Travel Area to 29 Countries

Bulgaria and Romania are now officially part of the Schengen Zone, making travel across 29 European countries easier. As they continue aligning with the European Union’s political and economic framework, the easing of border controls will provide significant benefits to businesses and travellers alike.

The Schengen Area originated in 1985 as an intergovernmental initiative among Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, France, and Luxembourg. Named after the village in Luxembourg where the agreement was signed, it has since grown into the world’s largest visa-free travel area, facilitating seamless movement for millions of people.

Today, the Schengen Zone spans 29 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. Additionally, non-EU members Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein participate in the agreement, reinforcing Europe’s commitment to open borders and regional cooperation.

With a population of approximately 420 million people and covering over 4 million square kilometres, the Schengen Area enhances economic growth, tourism, and cross-border trade. The inclusion of Bulgaria and Romania further strengthens this cooperation, fostering greater connectivity across the continent.

Although land and sea border checks have been lifted for these two nations, some air border controls will remain in place temporarily. Nevertheless, this expansion marks a significant step towards a more integrated Europe, where ease of movement continues to be a defining feature of the region.

As Bulgaria and Romania embrace their new status within Schengen, businesses, tourists, and residents stand to gain from a more streamlined and efficient travel experience, reinforcing Europe’s vision of unity and economic prosperity.
