Do you know about the TEF test? Canada’s TEST D’ÉVALUATION DE FRANÇAIS (TEF) is a French language proficiency test that is recognized by various organizations in Canada and other French-speaking countries. The TEF test is used to assess the French language skills of non-native speakers and it is commonly used for immigration purposes by the Canadian government. The TEF is one of the accepted Canadian Language proficiency tests.
There are new updates coming to the TEF test and people who are migrating to Canada need to know of these updates so that they are better prepared for their exams.
If you plan to take the TEF Canada or the TEFAQ after December 10, 2023, please note that changes are coming to the Written Comprehension, Oral Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Syntax tests.
Changes To The TEF Test
On Monday, December 11th, the TEF Oral Comprehension, Written Comprehension, and Vocabulary and Syntax formats will be updated. These changes will affect the TEF test and its variants, including TEF Canada and TEFAQ.
The new developments and current changes have specific goals. The test will feature more authentic themes reflecting real-life situations and the diverse cultures and societies of Francophone countries. Both audio and written content will draw from a wider range of Francophone news articles.
Additionally, the test format will be made more user-friendly for students, facilitating a better test-taking experience.
Now, let’s outline the changes:
Tests impacted:
- Oral Comprehension test
- Written Comprehension test
- Vocabulary and syntax test
(Note: The Oral and Written Expression tests will remain the same).
Here’s what’s changing:
- Fewer questions in both the Oral Comprehension and Written Comprehension tests, but the test duration will remain unchanged.
- New, simpler types of questions will be introduced. Note that the test duration and scoring system will remain as is.
Content changes in the test:
- For Written Comprehension (TEF, TEF Canada, TEFAQ):
- Discontinued elements: passages to put in order, synonymous sentences (previously section C & D).
- Evolving: fill-in-the-blank passages (previously section B).
- New elements: more passages, the introduction of incomplete sentences (where a word is missing in a sentence), and simple reading exercises based on short passages and charts.
For Oral Comprehension (TEF, TEF Canada, TEFAQ):
- Discontinued elements: exercises identifying grammatical and spelling errors in short passages (previously section D).
- Evolving: exercises involving synonyms or synonymous word groups in short passages (previously section B).
- New elements: fill-in-the-blank passages to assess vocabulary and grammar.
Created in 1998 by the Paris Ile-de-France CCI, the Test d’Evaluation de Français (TEF) is an international benchmark test that measures your level of knowledge and skills in French.
Results are valid for two years, Various organizations in Canada and other French-speaking countries recognize the TEF. In Canada, it is recognized by the Quebec Ministry of Immigration, Francisation, and Integration as proof of French language proficiency for immigration purposes. It is also recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education, research and Innovation, the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, the French Ministry of Education, the French Ministry of the Interior, and the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration
It is also recognized by universities, employers, and professional organisations as a measure of language proficiency.
Outside of Canada, the TEF is recognized by the European Commission and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which provides a common framework for language proficiency assessment in Europe. It is also recognized by companies, organizations, and governments in various countries as a measure of French language proficiency.
