Data mapping is the next step to fulfilling the needs of Nigerians in the diaspora who want to be able to vote and have a say in Nigeria’s elections and politics. As the nation explores avenues to include every citizen in the democratic and voting process, ensuring accurate data collection and management is paramount. Even when you japa, you can now vote.
What is Data Mapping?
For voting purposes, data mapping for citizens in the diaspora involves identifying, organising, and maintaining records of eligible voters living abroad. This process is crucial for enabling and managing diaspora voting in national elections. It ensures that every eligible Nigerian, regardless of their location, is recognised and provided with the necessary tools to participate in the electoral process. The key components of data mapping include:
- Identifying Eligible Voters
- Mapping Locations & Population Density
- Establishing Secure Voting Systems
- Ensuring Electoral Integrity
- Engagement & Awareness
NIDCOM’s 2025 Comprehensive Initiative
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has launched its 2025 Comprehensive Data Mapping Initiative for Nigerians in the EurAsia region. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of the commission, discussed the critical role of data mapping in strengthening engagement with Nigerians abroad. She emphasised that all Nigerians of voting age should have the right to vote, regardless of their location. This initiative marks a significant milestone, as the first quarter of 2025 will be dedicated to focusing on the EurAsia region, this is a strategic move aimed at forging stronger ties with the diaspora.
Expanding Beyond Electoral Engagement
In addition to facilitating the voting process, data mapping is paving the way for more personalised services for Nigerians abroad. Launched in 2021, the Diaspora Data-Mapping Portal was created to collect comprehensive demographic data on Nigerians living overseas. The portal is not only designed to enhance electoral participation but also to tailor services to the needs of the diaspora community. Among the innovative programmes planned are Diaspora Mortgage Schemes, Diaspora Housing Solutions, and other bespoke packages that cater specifically to the unique circumstances of Nigerians living in different parts of the world.
By integrating data mapping into its strategy, Nigeria is taking a proactive approach to ensuring that every eligible citizen has a voice. The initiative promises to boost both the democratic process and the range of services available to Nigerians in the diaspora. As these projects progress, they are expected to play a pivotal role in fostering a more inclusive and engaged Nigerian community, both at home and abroad.
