Understanding the Eligibility Requirements for the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
The eligibility requirements for the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) have recently changed, and it is essential for prospective applicants to be fully aware of the updated guidelines. The PGWP offers international students the opportunity to work in Canada post-graduation, enabling them to gain valuable Canadian work experience. However, graduating from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) does not automatically guarantee eligibility for the PGWP, and not all programmes of study meet the necessary criteria.
First and foremost, even if you have successfully graduated from a PGWP-eligible DLI, you must confirm that your specific programme of study qualifies for the permit. For further clarification on eligible programmes, please refer to the official PGWP guidelines
It is also important to note that certain individuals, such as flight school graduates or those who submitted their Post Graduation Work Permit application before 1st November 2024, are exempt from the new requirements. For these applicants, the previous eligibility rules remain in force.
Post Graduation Work Permit Validity:
The validity of your PGWP is influenced by several factors. Not only does the level and duration of your programme play a role, but your passport’s expiration date is also critical. You must ensure that your passport remains valid for the entire period during which you are eligible for a PGWP. If your passport is due to expire before the end of your eligibility period, it is essential to renew it before submitting your application. Moreover, should you require a PGWP extension, you will need to apply via paper after obtaining a new passport with an appropriate validity period.
Detailed Eligibility Requirements:
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Programme Completion: You must have completed a programme of study at a PGWP-eligible Designated Learning Institution. Outside Quebec, this requires a programme of at least eight months, while in Quebec, the minimum is 900 hours.
- Full-Time Study: You are expected to have maintained full-time status in Canada during every academic semester of your study programme. An exception is made for the final semester, where part-time study is permitted.
- Application Timing: Your PGWP application must be submitted within 180 days from the confirmation that you completed your programme of study.
- Valid Study Permit: Your study permit should have been valid at some point during the 180 days following graduation and before the submission of your PGWP application.
By following these guidelines and ensuring that you meet all the outlined criteria, you can successfully navigate the PGWP application process and take full advantage of the opportunity to gain Canadian work experience post-graduation.
