Greenland Work Visa Application Guide 2025
Eligibility, Process, and Skilled Worker Opportunities
Have you heard of Greenland before? It’s a beautiful country, and your next job might be on the Positive List for Skilled Work. The Greenland Work Visa might just be your ticket to a new chapter. Let’s talk about the application process, eligibility requirements, and all the essentials you need to know, including information about the Positive List for Skilled Work.
Who Needs a Greenland Work Visa?
Let’s start with eligibility. As a Nordic citizen (from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden), you don’t need a visa or work permit to live and work in Greenland
For EU/EEA and Swiss nationals, a visa isn’t needed to enter Greenland, but you do need a residence and work permit to live and work there.
Non-EU/EEA citizens (that’s most of us) will need both a visa and a work/residence permit before stepping into any job role in Greenland.
Application Requirements
You’ll need:
- A valid job offer from a Greenlandic employer
- A passport valid beyond your intended stay
- Your employment contract (not older than 30 days)
- Educational certificates and relevant professional authorisations
The application is processed by SIRI (the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration) and typically takes up to three months, and while you wait, you cannot begin working, so patience is key.
The Positive List for Skilled Work
If you’re in a profession currently experiencing a shortage in Denmark and Greenland, you might qualify for the Positive List for Skilled Work. This list is updated twice a year and includes roles in engineering, healthcare, IT, construction, and more. Having a job offer in one of these fields, alongside relevant qualifications, makes your application stand out and faster to process.
Employers must also meet specific salary and employment standards and must comply with training obligations (like apprenticeships). Not meeting these obligations could lead to rejection, even if you’re qualified.
A Few More Things…
- You can only work for the employer and role stated on your permit.
- If you stay abroad longer than six months, your permit could lapse.
- If you stay in Greenland beyond six months, you’ll become liable for Greenlandic tax.
- Permanent residency typically requires nine years of legal residence, language skills, and community integration.
Thinking of taking the leap? Whether you’re a nurse, engineer, or IT professional, Greenland might be calling your name. Be sure to cross-check with nyidanmark.dk for the latest updates, and always confirm that your employer is compliant with the rules before you apply.
