Nigerian Immigrants Welcome Centre Ontario Set to Open on April 20
Nigerian Immigrants Welcome Centre Ontario is opening its doors.
Moving to a new country is no small feat. From culture shock to career transitions and the ever-rising cost of housing, settling into a place like Canada can feel overwhelming, especially for Nigerian immigrants. But what if you don’t have to go at it alone? What if you had support? A community?
Come April 20, 2025, the very first Nigerian Immigrants Welcome Centre will open its doors in Ontario.
This initiative, led by Nigerian community leaders in Canada and supported by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), is the first of its kind. It’s designed to support both newly arrived and long-established Nigerian migrants in adjusting to life in Canada because we all know the transition isn’t always smooth or easy.
NiDCOM’s Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, praised the Ontario community for spearheading this effort. She highlighted how important it is for Nigerians in the diaspora to create support systems for one another, especially in the face of increasing settlement challenges and housing pressures.
The Centre will offer a range of essential services tailored to the Nigerian immigrant experience: career mentoring, job placement, language coaching, settlement assistance, empowerment programmes, and even food bank support. It’s not just about helping people survive, it’s about helping them find their feet and thrive in their new home.
According to Mr Uche Okugo, President of the Network of Nigerians in Canada (NNC), the Centre will play a key role in helping immigrants find their footing quickly so they can contribute meaningfully to Canadian society.
Dr Olufemi Adegun, who heads the planning committee, shared that the rising cases of refugee challenges and systemic barriers in Canada made the timing of the centre even more critical.
Relocating can feel very isolating, especially for immigrants, but you don’t have to go at it alone. This centre is a beacon of hope, a community with some semblance of homeland familiarity.
So if you’re Nigerian, new to Canada, and you want to feel less alone, understood and supported, the Nigerian Immigrants Welcome Centre Ontario might be just what you’ve been needing.
