Wifi Password: Stories And Experiences Exchanged Outside a Restaurant.
Sonder: The profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one’s own, which they are constantly living despite one’s personal lack of awareness of it.
As you travel the world, you are drawn into the very colourful world that other people live in and some of them brush you with some of that colour, the brush strokes vivid and bright. You exchange and share stories, and orbit each other’s universes for a moment.
A Nigerian nomad shares her story on Twitter of an interaction with a man who also travels the world and here is a bit of that exchange.
Today I was sitting down outside a resturant when a man who looked like he was in his late 50s walked up to me & asked me for the wifi password, I didn’t know it but told him to go in and check. He came back out after a few minutes & shared the password with me.

He then asked me where I was from and it turned out he had lived in Nigeria for 5 years in the mid 2000s. He asked me about Oshodi, I told him it has changed a little since then. We talked about Lagos traffic & his epic road trip to Port Harcourt.

We spoke for an hour or so about career, family, travel and some other things in between. After a while, I was like “hey, I don’t know your name yet”. We laughed, introduced ourselves and parted ways a little later. I love random encounters like this.

I particularly liked his travel stories. I would randomly mention a place and he’ll be like “yeah I’ve been there” and we would exchange experiences. He told me how he recently went to his favorite places he visited as a young man just to see how much they have changed.

People travel for so many reasons and apart from seeking a better life in another country, wanting more than your birth country offers, some people also travel because there is so much to learn from the whole experience, from the people that you meet. This is a reply to the tweet up above,

As you travel, you become more cultured, exposed to different people, their culture, their different way of life, you learn so much, become more open-minded, you experience people, you learn from them, an unending, never dry well of knowledge. You become a happier, more satisfied, healthier and more well-rounded human travelling the world. You touch lives and lives touch you.
Studies have shown that people who travel become more open-minded and trusting. It also helps to reduce the risks of anxiety also lowers your risk of depression and heart attack, while also developing a healthy brain. It improves your creativity and enhances cognitive abilities. Adam Galinsky, Columbia Business School professor said “Foreign experiences increase both cognitive flexibility and depth and integrativeness of thought, the ability to make deep connections between disparate forms.”
Travelling also relieves stress and provides an escape from your regular life for a minute.
Something else travelling will do is boost your confidence, help you feel better equipped to handle things that come your way when you travel, you are forced out of your comfort zone, you have to deal with people probably vastly different from you and this boosts and builds confidence. You lose your fear of talking to or even approaching strangers and this spills over into your daily life and leaves you with no fear or at least less fear in approaching any situation.
Japa can be for a myriad of reasons, be it for vacation or education or relocation but we hope that as you travel the world you open yourself up to the experiences your travels will bring you, hope you savour and enjoy every bit of it.
