Alma Asinobi’s Adventure
She initially planned to travel from Antarctica to Australia, also visiting the other five continents in between, within 70 hours. However, she had to rethink her plans after discovering that, just a week after posting her video, she found out an American man, Johnny Cruz Buckingham had broken the record using his American passport in just 64 hours, automatically shaving 10 hours off her initial planned time if she still wanted to attempt to break the record. This meant going back to the drawing board and revising her plans.
She then set out to break the record in 60 hours. With support, cheers and love from Nigerians and the whole of Africa, she travelled from Lagos to Antarctica to begin the journey on the 15th of March.
A plane with issues in Chile delayed the journey once again till the 20th of March, but despite that and many more hurdles like denied getting denied boarding a plane in Perth Australia, to a cancelled flight in Spain and so much more, she journeyed from King George Island in Antarctica back to Chile, to Punta Canas, Dominican Republic, to Madrid, Spain, to Cairo, Egypt, to Dubai, UAE and finally Sydney, Australia with her total hours being 71:26:25.50
As Nigerians with a Nigerian passport, we lose out on so many opportunities due to the weakness of the passport. We have to pay high visa fees, we also suffer high visa rejection rates, we are often subjected to discriminatory searches at airports, sometimes denied flights, and so much more. Alma embarking on this adventure tells our story and forces the world to sit up, to listen and to treat us better.
We congratulate Alma for daring to dream and making it a reality, for sharing our story, and for being an absolute superstar. We are truly in awe.
You go, Alma!!!
