Estonia for Nigerians
Do you stand a chance?
A Nigerian resident in Estonia discussed her personal insights into immigration opportunities for Nigerians considering Estonia as a potential new home, offering a firsthand perspective on the current immigration landscape.
Anita Izato, a Nigerian lawyer living in Estonia, shares her experience as a Nigerian living in the country. She shares how it is the only country to have achieved 100% e-governance, a good standard of living, enabling you to have a good life on your salary. Estonia stands out as a unique European destination, renowned for its advanced digital infrastructure and innovative approach to governance
Immigration Challenges
The current immigration situation in Estonia is one of strict regulations and limited opportunities. With a population of approximately 1.3 million and an immigrant ratio of around 30%, Nigerian professionals face particular hurdles:
- Visa Application Difficulties: Estonia doesn’t have an embassy in Nigeria, requiring applicants to travel to alternative countries for visa processing.
- Low Acceptance Rates: Statistically, Nigerian and Pakistani applicants experience higher rejection rates, with some estimates suggesting up to 80% of applications are declined.
- Limited Employment Opportunities: Estonian corporations mostly hire within the European Union, creating significant barriers for external candidates.
Miss Anato talks about this in her thread, pointing out that Estonia has reduced its immigration quota in the past year, as the country’s citizen-to-immigrant ratio is 70:30, meaning there are only about 430,000 immigrants. She further stated that there’s also a quota system where visas are granted to citizens from a particular region more than others, and right now, the visas are granted more to Asians. She states that Nigerians and Pakistanis are more likely to be rejected at least 80% of the time.
A lot of people have questions about Estonia and I can’t respond to all the DMs, so here goes nothing!
Estonia is a very small country in the Baltics but has achieved a remarkable fit! It’s the only country in the world to achieve 100% e-governance!

For people looking to work in Estonia, she shares that “Estonian corporations rarely hire from outside the EU, so your best option is via this route has been sort of blocked or made highly difficult to pass through, but not impossible!”
Also touched on the fact that because Estonia does not have an embassy in Nigeria, more often than not, you’ll have to travel to another country to apply for a visa.
It is, however, not impossible to relocate to Estonia as it remains an attractive destination for skilled professionals, particularly in tech and digital industries. However, prospective migrants must prepare for a difficult and uncertain process due to the country’s immigration restrictions.
