The Tragic Death of Ms Olubunmi
Ms. Ladi Anzaki Olubunmi, a Nigerian TikTok content moderator living in Nairobi, was found dead in her apartment after being absent from work for three days. Olubunmi had been working with a Teleperformance company in Nairobi, Kenya, since 2022. Her sudden death has raised concerns about the working and living conditions of Nigerians employed abroad.
In response to this tragic incident, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has called for the establishment of a Labour Mobility Law in Nigeria. This proposed law aims to protect the rights, interests, and overall well-being of Nigerians working or studying abroad by ensuring proper documentation, monitoring, and support systems. In a statement signed by NIDCOM’s Media and Public Relations Unit representative, Gabriel Odu, Dabiri-Erewa emphasised that such legislation would help prevent issues related to employment conditions, mental health support, and difficulties in returning to Nigeria when necessary.
She also urged Nigerians seeking job opportunities abroad to conduct thorough due diligence before accepting offers. She advised that job seekers should only engage with vetted organisations that provide legitimate employment opportunities, reducing the risk of exploitation or unsafe working conditions.
Furthermore, Dabiri-Erewa reassured Nigerians in Kenya that the Federal Government is actively involved in the matter. She called for patience as investigations into Olubunmi’s death are ongoing. The Nigerian High Commission in Kenya has been directed to closely monitor the situation and provide necessary support to the bereaved family.
Meanwhile, the Kenyan authorities have been urged to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Olubunmi’s death. The Nigerian government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens living and working abroad, reinforcing the importance of protective policies and support structures for Nigerians in the diaspora.
