Why 85 Nigerians Are Still Stuck in U.S. Camps and Their Deportation Delayed
At least 3,690 Nigerians are currently facing deportation under President Trump’s renewed immigration policies. Since his return to office on January 20, 2025, Trump has signed executive orders reversing many of his predecessor’s immigration reforms, leading to widespread crackdowns on undocumented migrants, including thousands of Nigerians.
Although 85 Nigerians have already received deportation orders, their removal from the United States has yet to begin. According to the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), these individuals are currently held in U.S. deportation camps. She clarified that their deportation is not directly tied to President Trump’s new immigration policies but is instead part of routine immigration enforcement.
She emphasized that migrants are not criminals and should be treated with dignity and respect, even as they return to Nigeria. She also reassured deportees, including those with criminal records, that efforts are in place to reintegrate them into society. Additionally, she noted that returnees seeking employment or skill acquisition would receive the necessary support.
Public affairs analyst Olusola Taiwo opines that ongoing diplomatic discussions between Nigeria and the United States might be the reasons for the delay in deportations. Factors such as diplomatic agreements, flight availability, and enforcement strategies could be some of the reasons for the slow process.
Three weeks after the U.S. began deportation proceedings for thousands of undocumented immigrants, Nigeria has yet to receive any of its affected citizens. As diplomatic negotiations continue, the fate of these individuals remains uncertain. The Nigerian government is advocating for their humane treatment while working to facilitate a dignified return. This situation highlights the broader impact of global immigration policies and the challenges undocumented migrants face in their pursuit of a better future.
