It can be such a draining and stressful process trying to adapt to a new environment, making a new place your home and building a new experience. A lot of people migrate to the Western world for various reasons especially citizens from a lot of third-world countries. As immigrants relocating to Western countries, sometimes it can be quite difficult and daunting to adapt to the Western culture and community.
It’s a whole new place, a whole new environment, a whole new situation, a whole new culture, one that you are just getting exposed to and there is a possibility of a number of culture shocks, seeing things done in ways that you would never think of doing them, experiencing new cuisines, experiencing new people, learning that what may be right in your country might be completely different in somebody else’s country and how to navigate this entire situation. It doesn’t have to be a herculean task, there are so many little ways that you can adapt to a new culture, and also integrate into the community.
The best ways to start with adapting to the Western world and integrating into the community
LanguageÂ
If you know that you will be relocating to a different country where the common lingua Franca is not English or your native language, it will do you well to start learning the language of your new home even before you get there. There are many applications that can help you in your new language learning process. Examples of these apps are Duolingo, Babbel to mention a few.
A lot of people also use Youtube and watch videos and materials about the language to learn about it. This will make your integration into the new community to be faster and easier. Also helps members of the community open up to you more once they see you speaking their language, it just helps to loosen people up and makes the interaction easier.Â
Join the community
One of the best ways to adapt to a new culture is to get involved. Join the community, volunteer, and do something that puts a smile on people’s faces, if you have children, join school activities, volunteer, help out, join the neighbourhood church or mosque and other communities of interest that would help you assimilate and adapt well in your new home.
Be open-mindedÂ
One of the ways to make the experience of adapting to a new culture and community easier is to open your mind to new experiences and also new ways of living and different cultures. You have to keep in mind that the way things will be done in your new home will be different from how it’s done where you’re coming from so you need to keep your mind open to make the experience an enjoyable one and also less overwhelming.
Creating your own support systemÂ
In countries like the United Kingdom, America and Canada, there are communities of different Nigerian ethnicities; Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Ebira people and so many more. They create WhatsApp groups and also meet fortnightly or monthly. This creates a sense of camaraderie and community and togetherness. Joining communities of people that are the same ethnic group or cultural groups as you will help you meet new people and you also network and start building your own support system.
Keep in touch with your culture
Even as you adapt to a new community and a new culture it is important to also keep in touch with your own cultural roots. You are still your own person and your own individual with your identity and that should not be swallowed up by a new culture and a new community.
One of the ways to hold on to your roots is to speak your native language at home and you can also share your culture with all the people in your new community and also join communities of other people from the same ethnic group as you. What this does is remind you of your journey and where you’re from. It also keeps you rooted in your culture.
Extend Grace to yourselfÂ
You need to be patient and also extend grace to yourself because adapting to a new culture and community is not exactly the easiest thing to do. You should not be scared to ask for help when you need it and also seek support from other immigrants like you in that community and make use of available resources that are made open to you understanding that it is not a one-day thing and it might take time for you to be able to adapt completely.
ConclusionÂ
Relocating to another country is already a lot on your plate, when you add adapting, settling into a new community and also experiencing a different culture other than what you have been used to all your life it can be a lot to take in and a lot to deal with but it is not impossible and with creating your own support system, extending Grace to yourself, being open-minded, joining a community and also learning the language of your new home you are several steps into adapting, experiencing and enjoying your new culture and building your new home.
