Nigerian Man Sentenced to Life for the Murder of Iris Setti in Italy
A Nigerian man has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Italy after being found guilty of raping and murdering 61-year-old Iris Setti in Rovereto.
The brutal attack took place on August 5, 2023, in a public park in the northeastern city. Witnesses saw the perpetrator, Nweke, who was known to be an alcoholic and drug user, physically assaulting Setti—striking her face and head with a blunt object and his fists before throwing her to the ground.
After the assault, Nweke fled the scene, but law enforcement officers intercepted him on Via Maioliche. Officers from the Carabinieri used tasers to subdue and arrest him. Meanwhile, emergency responders rushed Setti to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries within hours.
The murder of Iris Setti sparked public outrage, with many demanding swift justice. A thorough investigation followed, gathering forensic evidence and witness testimonies to strengthen the case.
During the trial, the court found Nweke guilty of sexual violence, robbery, and aggravated murder. Prosecutors presented strong evidence, including eyewitness accounts and forensic reports, leading to the maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Setti’s family and the wider community welcomed the verdict, viewing it as a step toward justice for victims of violent crimes. Her tragic death remains a reminder of the need for stronger measures to protect vulnerable individuals.
With this ruling, Italian authorities reaffirm their commitment to enforcing justice and ensuring that offenders are held accountable for violent crimes.
