NMCN: Over 1000 Nigerian nurses Facing Deportation from the UK over Fraud Allegations by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria
Some Nigerian nurses have been asked to leave the United Kingdom as soon as possible despite awaiting appeals, and this is due to an investigation over alleged fraud in a test centre in Ibadan. These fraud allegations were levied against them by the nursing regulator which has impacted about 2,000 thousand internationally trained Nigeria nurses and has caused the visas of these nurses to be revoked
Although the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria(NMCN) has denied deliberately delaying the hearing and stated that they are actively working to schedule the remaining sessions, they are still facing accusations of intentional delays. To prevent the affected nurses from being expelled from the United Kingdom, advocates are urging the NMCN to expedite the process.
About 50 of the accused nurses were able to successfully appeal, but after this successful appeal, other nurses have struggled to get a hearing and some of the nurses even lamented the unfortunate situations where they got fired from their jobs and their visas got revoked.
Claiming unfairness, about 50 nurses were considering taking the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to court, stating that their application to join the register was removed and unfairly removed, all of this happening after the investigations
Asking for reconsideration for all the nurses who had been expunged from the register and those who had their application removed, the 50 nurses served a “pre-action protocol letter” promising that legal actions would be taken if their concerns were not addressed within 14 days. They also asked that the NMCN liaise with the Home Office to prevent the deportation of the nurses until after their appeals.
They are now proceeding to pursue legal action against the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as the council did not heed their demands within the 14-day deadline they were given.
