Visa Application Chaos Ends: Nigeria Takes a Bold Step Towards a Digital Future
On an X (formerly Twitter) Space hosted by Segun Awosanya, a well-known digital commentator, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that all visa applications will soon be processed online. He emphasized that this move aims to curb corruption, enhance national security, and create a more unified visa regime.
“In a bid to reduce corruption, ensure national security, and maintain uniformity, a centralized visa approval centre has been established to streamline visa administration,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated. “Before March 1st, all visa applications will transition online to allow for proper vetting.”
The Minister also highlighted advancements in the country’s data infrastructure, particularly the harmonized data centre housed at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) in Sauka, Abuja, at the headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). According to him, the facility is a groundbreaking achievement in Nigeria’s history and ranks among the world’s largest data centres, boasting an impressive 8.3-petabyte capacity.
“The initial plan was to build a 1.4-petabyte data centre, but we exceeded expectations,” he revealed. This expansion ensures a more robust and secure data management system, strengthening the nation’s digital infrastructure and reinforcing compliance with the Data Protection Act.
Dr Tunji-Ojo also addressed the challenges inherited by the current administration, stating that before now, the Nigeria Immigration Service had no centralized data centre. Instead, critical data of Nigerians were stored by various private contractors, a situation that posed significant risks and violated the Data Protection Act.
With the implementation of these reforms, the government aims to establish a more transparent and efficient system that benefits both citizens and foreign applicants. The move to digital visa applications and a harmonized data centre marks a significant step towards modernization, reinforcing the country’s commitment to technological advancement and national security.
