Dealing with immigration issues in a foreign land can be scary and difficult. Nigerians in the Philippines are struggling due to the deteriorating state of the Nigerian embassy in Manila. Last week, we reported that two Nigerian embassies in the United States received new passport printing machines, and Nigerians in the Philippines are likely hoping for similar government support to alleviate their difficulties.
Nigerians in the Philippines are Struggling
Nigerians in the Philippines have been going through a lot since the embassy was razed by fire last year, it is now almost impossible for Nigerians to process their passport as the embassy has no passport sealing machine which has made everything so much worse.Â
Tony Marioghae, President of Nigerians in Diaspora Philippines (NIDOPHIL), is urging the Nigerian government to address the challenges faced by Nigerians living abroad. He emphasized that Nigerians are trailblazers and among the most educated immigrant groups. Despite their significant contributions to the Nigerian economy through remittances, they lack the necessary diplomatic support and infrastructure.
He further highlighted the embassy’s deteriorating condition since the fire, emphasizing how this has left Nigerian citizens vulnerable. Many Nigerians in Asian countries are facing violations of their fundamental rights, often suffering due to the actions of a few individuals involved in unlawful activities.
Nigerians abroad can not continue to go with the diplomatic support they need to thrive and live a good life outside the country. Moving away from your home country is already a lot to deal with, to then feel unsafe and abandoned by your government just adds a lot of fear to the already fraught situation.
