Tragic Reality: Nigerian Migrant Dies in Iraq After Seeking a Better Life
A Nigerian migrant who travelled to Iraq in search of a better life has tragically lost her life, with her body repatriated to Nigeria, as confirmed by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM. This incident highlights the grave risks associated with irregular migration and serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable challenges many face when seeking greener pastures.
Dabiri-Erewa has been vocal about the perils of migrating without adequate preparation and research. Speaking candidly about recent incidents, she explained: “The issue lies with those migrating irregularly, often to uncertain futures. Just a few days ago, we facilitated the return of a man’s wife—in a body bag. She went to Iraq in search of better opportunities, but that dream never materialised. Instead, we were left with the harsh reality of her untimely demise. Similarly, another woman, who had been battling depression, was able to return home a few weeks ago with our assistance.” Her words serve to underscore the multifaceted dangers of embarking on such journeys without proper safeguards.
The deceased woman, a dedicated housewife, was enticed by promises of prosperity in Iraq. Instead, she encountered circumstances that led to her tragic death, a loss that resonates deeply within her community and across the nation. The repatriation of her body is not only a sombre event but also a call to action for both potential Nigerian migrants and authorities to address the underlying issues that drive such risky ventures.
Dabiri-Erewa further emphasised that while seeking opportunities abroad is a legitimate choice, Nigerians must prioritise thorough research and take essential precautions. “It is perfectly acceptable for Nigerians to explore opportunities in other countries,” she stated, “but they must ensure that they are well informed about the destinations they choose. Without careful planning and awareness, one risks facing conditions far worse than those they intended to leave behind.”
This case serves as an important lesson for those considering migration. It underscores the need for proper guidance, community support, and the establishment of robust regulatory measures to protect vulnerable individuals from the pitfalls of irregular migration. As the nation reflects on this unfortunate incident, it becomes crucial to enhance public education and implement comprehensive support systems to mitigate such risks in the future.
