Nigerian-American Teen Osariemen Unuigbe Earns Admission to Six Ivy League Universities
Osariemen Unuigbe, an 18-year-old Nigerian-American student, has been accepted into six Ivy League universities, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, and the University of Pennsylvania. She also received offers from esteemed institutions such as Duke University, Spelman College, and Rutgers University.
Osariemen, who is currently a senior at Egg Harbor Township High School in New Jersey, is the daughter of Dr Augustine and Dr (Mrs) Florence Unuigbe, who hails from Edo State, Nigeria. Her parents are ecstatic with happiness over her accomplishments, saying her success is divine favour and describing it as “a great miracle”.
Apart from her academic excellence, Osariemen has shown dedication to leadership and extracurricular activities. Having held several leadership positions throughout her academic journey, she was also selected for the prestigious Governor’s School of New Jersey. She’s also talented in athletics and the arts, with interests in lacrosse, dancing, painting, and drawing.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Southern New Jersey Chapter, designated her a 2025 “Rising to the Top” scholar in honour of her all-around brilliance.
Not a lot of black people get into most of these institutions, and the fact that Osariemen got into six of these Ivy League institutions is not to be scoffed at but celebrated instead. According to the statistics, as of the 2024–2025 academic year, both Harvard and Yale Universities reported that 14% of their incoming undergraduate classes identified as Black or African American. Harvard’s Class of 2028 saw a decline in Black student enrollment to 14%, down from 18% the previous year.
Nigerians in the diaspora continue to break the glass ceiling and succeed despite the limitations.
