Canada: The Ultimate 15 Steps To-do list List For Seamless Integration.

Is that Canada’s door I hear you knocking on? Congratulations! It has finally happened! All the long process, the sleepless nights, the questions, the journey, the stress, and the headaches are finally paying off.

It is time for you to be on your way but before you do that, don’t you need to prepare? Figure out your next set of plans and course of action. Figure out how best to make your move as seamless as possible and your integration as pain-free and stress-free as can be.

There is this saying from my primary school that I must have heard a billion times (okay, a little exaggeration) You know that one? That one that goes “if you fail to plan then you plan to fail.”

Goodness!!! How I use to roll my eyes hard every exam season when the headmaster would stand there like he had the secret to the well-being of the world in his palms and say it but as I grow older, I have come to see how very germane it is to plan, Especially as you adult, those to-do lists will literally save your life. Is adulting your agemate? I have, no jokes, got a to-do list for every aspect of my life. I would not be doing too much if I say to-do lists are definitely life savers.

A Twitter user shares what she feels your map of action should look like in a 15-step to-do list and because I am your fairy godmother, I will lay it all out for you here.

Here are some of the things that should be on your to-do list as a new international student resuming and ready to settle down in Canada;

Here is the summary of the above thread. Your Canada To-do list made easy.

Table of Contents

  • Book your flight. Once you receive your passport with your visa on it, book your flight early to allow you to get good flight rates.
  • Get your study permit. If your program includes a work term and you have indicated that during your study visa application, you will be issued a work permit alongside your study permit.
  •  Get your social insurance number (SIN) Your SIN allows you to work in Canada as a student.
  •  Sort out your accommodation. Ensure you update your new address on your student profile.
  • Set up your school email account to receive official school information including details about orientation, residence, tuition fees, health plan, class registration and more.
  •  Register for classes. Confirm the courses you’ll be offering for the semester and register once the portal is open.
  •  Attend the new students’ orientation. New student orientation allows you to explore the campus meet the international centre staff and learn about the school services and resources.
  • Get your health insurance: Several Canadian provinces provide health insurance cards to int’l students under their provincial plan, but some do not.
  •  Obtain your school ID card.
  •  Open a bank account. Most banks will request for your study permit, SIN, enrolment verification letter and international passport.
  •  Get a phone number.
  •  Get a bus card.
  • Connect and network. Attend events organised by your school, department and faculty.
  •  Get a job/side business. Apply for jobs on or off campus.
  • Get your driver’s licence.
  • And finally, you might want to start this process as soon as you settle if you plan to own or drive a car in Canada immediately or in the near future.

We don’t want you overwhelmed as you begin this new journey and new life and I truly believe that with this to-do list your integration can happen as seamlessly as possible.
