Contactless Passport Application System: The Stress- Free Process Starting 2025

Nigerians Abroad Can Now Renew Passports Without Visiting the Embassy – The Contactless Passport Application System

There’s good news for Nigerians living in the diaspora, especially those in the United States and Brazil. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched the second phase of its contactless passport application system, making the entire process of renewing a Nigerian passport faster, easier, seamless and, well, completely digital.

The days of long queues, endless paperwork, or stressful trips to the nearest embassy are all done with. With this new system, Nigerians in the US, Brazil, Jamaica, and Mexico can now complete their passport renewals right from the comfort of their homes. All they need is a smartphone and access to the NIS Mobile app, which is currently available on the Google Play Store (don’t worry, iOS users, your version is on the way).

This system was first launched in Canada in late 2024 and has been gradually expanding to include parts of Europe and Asia. Now, with this second phase, more Nigerians abroad can benefit from a streamlined experience that mirrors global best practices.

Contactless Passport Application System: How It Works

The contactless passport application system works pretty much as the name implies, no physical contact required. Applicants begin by downloading the NIS Mobile app, where they create a profile, complete an eligibility check, and input key details like their National Identification Number (NIN) and current passport number.

Next, they upload required documents such as their NIN slip, birth certificate, and local government certificate. Biometric information (like fingerprint and facial recognition) is captured using the device’s camera, and yes, it’s that simple.

After a final review and online payment, the renewed passport is processed and delivered straight to the applicant’s chosen address.

What’s Next?

The NIS has announced plans to introduce this same service in Australia and Nigeria, although specific launch dates haven’t been shared just yet. For now, the focus is on ensuring that each rollout phase runs smoothly and efficiently.

This shift is a welcome one, especially for Nigerians juggling busy schedules abroad or living far from consular offices. It’s a step in the right direction and part of a broader effort to digitise essential services and make life easier for citizens, no matter where they are in the world.

So, if you’re a Nigerian in the US, Brazil, Jamaica, or Mexico and your passport needs a refresh, this new contactless passport application system is definitely worth checking out.
